Zhang Zhehan Returns to the Filming Set — Fully Involved in the Creative Process!
“I’ve rediscovered the long-lost feeling of being on a film set.”
Zhang Zhehan’s New “Scavenger” Themed Concert Returns to Hong Kong. This time, the show was held in an open-air venue with an ultra-long 50-meter extended stage. The carefully choreographed stage design and diverse performance formats immersed every audience member in a fantastical, interstellar world of light and shadow. A matrix of lighting effects created a space-like atmosphere with beams of energy, offering an immersive journey through an unknown planet.
All-New Stage Design and Choreography — Custom Costumes Support Narrative Theme
The stage design centered around a “space scavenger” storyline, presented through a three-part VCR narrative. The show opened with a spaceship crash-landing on an unknown planet. Zhang Zhehan appeared wearing a patchwork, wasteland-style robe, with distressed and torn fabrics symbolizing decay and damage. He lay at the center of the stage, and with each repeated call of “Can you hear me,” he seemed to be reaching out — like a lone traveler questioning unfamiliar lifeforms in an alien world.
In the second act, Zhang Zhehan appeared in a specially designed custom outfit. The costume featured gradient crystal particles created using PolyJet 3D printing technology, shimmering with iridescent light as it reflected the stage lighting — as if guiding the audience on a fantastical journey through an alien planet. As the stage lights shifted, the concert entered its rock segment. Zhang stepped out wearing a purple-silver metallic long robe and custom-made sunglasses, delivering a powerful and explosive performance. When the high-energy anthem “Datura” ended, he dramatically took off the robe, revealing a black mesh tank top paired with armor-like chains, setting off a wave of screaming from the crowd. In the fourth act, the atmosphere turned soft and serene. Zhang reappeared in a light pink suit, slowly walking down the extended runway. The suit was detailed with a matching satin ribbon at the neckline, fluttering gently in the evening breeze. Together with the audience, he sang “Lost Glacier” and “Moonlight”, leaving behind a dreamlike memory shared between artist and fans.
Fully Involved in Creative Direction — A Return to the Filming Set
From the selection of the “Scavenger” theme to the mid-stage video production, Zhang Zhehan was actively involved in the artistic creation of this newly themed concert. During the VCR filming process, he personally reviewed every shot and line of dialogue in the script, discussing details with the production team over the phone multiple times in advance. While shooting in the desert, he repeatedly threw himself to the ground amid blowing fans and swirling sand. After each take, he would sit in a nearby chair and pour out the sand that had filled his boots. His face and mouth were covered in grit from the harsh wind and dust, but he laughed and said, “I’ve rediscovered the long-lost feeling of being on a film set.”
In terms of visual presentation, the production team had initially planned for the live background effect of the song “Primordial Theater” to feature a static wolf head on the big screen. Zhang suggested that the wolf be made dynamic instead, to enhance the visual and auditory impact of the performance. At the end of the song, as the final line “please clap and cheer, for you, me, and for all.” was sung, Zhang offered another bold idea: “What if, at the very end, the wolf in the background suddenly opens its mouth and bares its fangs, as if it’s about to devour me?” Though the directors were initially taken aback by the suggestion, after several rehearsals and adjustments, the team unanimously agreed to implement it. In the end, the animated wolf’s dramatic effect became the perfect finishing touch, adding tension and brilliance to the performance.
Celebrating His Birthday Once Again with Fans — Continuing His Musical Journey
The concert coincided with the eve of Zhang Zhehan’s birthday. Surrounded by well wishes and spontaneous singing from fans in the audience, Zhang made a wish in front of his birthday cake. He shared emotionally, “Time really flies. I still clearly remember this day in 2023, when I held my very first concert in Thailand and spent an unforgettable birthday with everyone.”
After completing the final new song “WU” for the Scavenger album, Zhang Zhehan has, over the past three years, maintained a consistent pace of releasing one album per year, culminating in a trilogy: Deep Blue, Datura, and Scavenger. His musical style has evolved from lyrical storytelling to a more diverse blend of genres, incorporating elements like electronic and rock. Looking to the future, Zhang expressed his intention to continue exploring the boundaries of creative expression, using inner reflection and the natural world as the foundation of his music — and reaching for even more possibilities in artistic form.
