Zhang Zhehan Addresses Yasukuni Shrine Controversy, Laments: ‘I’ve Lost the Means to Explain’

Zhang Zhehan’s “Primordial Theater 2.0” Concert Concludes in Seoul

Zhang Zhehan recently wrapped up his “Primordial Theater 2.0” concert in Seoul, South Korea. The evening kicked off with a series of meticulously choreographed new dance tracks, whose dynamic rhythms and electrifying energy instantly ignited the atmosphere.

Performing in Korea for the first time, Zhang shared his most profound impressions of the country, recalling his participation in the competitive variety show Dream Team. “At that time, it was a mix of personal conviction, a man’s drive to win, and a sense of national pride that motivated us,” he said, also reminiscing about his love for Korean cuisine.

As part of the upgraded Primordial Theater theme, this concert featured not only newly arranged tracks and the debut of several new songs but also enhancements in stage design and costume styling. After performing the song Going Off, Zhang commented, “The Chinese name of this song translates to ‘closure.’ Today, I also want to bring closure to certain matters.”

He removed the microphone from the piano, walked to the center of the stage, and, after a moment of contemplation, said:
“It’s been three years. I have never found the opportunity to present the truth about what happened back then. But now, I want to tell everyone: In 2018, during cherry blossom season, I walked along the Chidorigafuchi trail, admiring the blossoms, and passed by a garden. At the time, I had no idea what was behind me. Three years later, when I saw the news, I wanted to explain, but by then, I had lost all means to do so. I am a native-born Chinese. I have never, and will never, visit or worship at the Yasukuni Shrine. I deeply love my country. It’s the trust and support of all of you that have carried me to this day. Thank you.”

With that, Zhang bowed deeply to the audience, expressing his gratitude, and then led them in a heartfelt rendition of Chinese People.
