Some people speak like daylight—direct, bright, and unmistakably clear. Others prefer to unfold their inner world in the shifting space between light and shadow. For Zhang Zhehan, the identities of actor and singer are not separate territories, but two expressions of the same path. Before the camera, he steps into different lives and circumstances through his roles, letting emotions settle within space and story. In music, he responds to his inner world through melody and voice, allowing feeling to move slowly between rhythm and light.

If acting is a way of observing the world, then music feels more like an echo of the self. These two forms of creation intertwine across time, gradually tracing the contours of his own artistic trajectory.

Moon  | Finding Coordinates in Creation

In many people’s imagination, artists tend to be quiet, restrained, even slightly distant. Yet in Zhang Zhehan, there is also a clear outward-moving energy. He can sit still for hours reading or writing, but he can just as easily sling a camera over his shoulder, get on a bicycle, and measure mountains and cities with his own steps. His cycling journey from Shangri-La to Lasa became the documentary August (2024), captured through his own lens. Thoughts settle in words, while the body stays alert through

movement—stillness and motion, inward and outward, together forming the truest texture of his daily life. Many would call this a contradiction. But perhaps a better understanding is that he was never meant to be defined by a single label. Multiple temperaments, multiple directions of growth —this is simply what a creator looks like at their most alive.

Stars | Observing the Self Through Mirrors

Zhang Zhehan’s music did not appear as a sudden turn, but as a path slowly unfolding. His album Scavenger (2024) looks toward a wider spiritual wilderness. The work carries a quiet, ruin-like atmosphere—desolation, fragments, and classical imagery woven together. Pieces left behind by time are picked up one by one, not to rebuild a flawless world, but to search for meaning within brokenness, to leave a faint glimmer in the barren landscape.

If Scavenger was a gathering of fragments from the outside world, the later musical trilogy Kaleidoscope (2025) feels more like a series of questions turned inward. Using the idea of mirrors as its central image, the project reflects the gaze of others, the weight of expectations, and the magnified figure of the public self. Each song turns into a different mirror, showing the self that is watched, projected, and re-interpreted, while also recording his attempt to understand

himself again. Recently, he has also shared updates about new film and television projects in development on his personal platforms. From music to moving images, his forms of expression continue to expand.

Night | Returning to the Rhythm of Life

If creation turns one inward, then sports and travel keep life open to the world. Tennis, skiing, cycling—over time, these interests have formed a steady rhythm. The swing of a racket, the speed of a downhill run, the scenery along the road all become ways of staying connected to the world beyond himself.

This physical energy naturally extends into his sense of style. Whether it leans toward athletic silhouettes or something more artistic, what he values most is a certain state of being—relaxed, open, yet grounded with strength. In this rhythm, fashion is no longer just appearance, but an extension of the way he lives.

Dawn | Continuing Forward

After both inward exploration and outward journeys, Zhang Zhehan’s expectations for the future have become surprisingly simple. Reading, exercise, language study—these ordinary routines gradually build a stable order in life, allowing creativity to become less about sudden inspiration and more about steady accumulation.

When speaking about the future, the word he returns to most is warmth. In a world that changes constantly, he believes less in grand ambitions and more in real, tangible connections between people. Perhaps the distance between stage and everyday life is not as great as we imagine. When the lights fade, it is still the same person walking forward. Night will pass, and morning will always arrive.

Time continues to move. For Zhang Zhehan, creation has never been an endpoint, but a path still unfolding. Actor and singer answer each other across different mediums, growing between life and the world. From stars to moonlight to dawn, every expression becomes a coordinate in time. Meanwhile, May is also Zhang Zhehan’s birthday.New stories are still opening, and he continues forward at his own pace, toward a wider horizon.

marie claire: How did today’s shoot feel?

Zhang Zhehan: The first look—with the open back and the looser styling—felt like a very bold attempt for me. The second setup, with the screen-like backdrop and the grid framing, had a sense of tension in it, almost like being held inside something.

marie claire: Which three items best represent who you are right now in 2026?

Zhang Zhehan: A tennis racket, a microphone, and a camera. They represent what I love, what I work at, and what I’m good at.

marie claire: How much do you think clothing defines who we are?

Zhang Zhehan: First impressions matter a lot. Sometimes you meet someone only once, but that first look is what they remember.

marie claire: Does your style change with your creative phase or mood?

Zhang Zhehan: Definitely. Just like how you wake up feeling different every morning.

marie claire: Are you willing to keep imperfection and vulnerability in your work or styling?

Zhang Zhehan: I once heard a Chinese director say that through film he wanted to show that none of us are perfect—that everyone has fragile corners inside. Real courage isn’t pretending those don’t exist. It’s being willing to face your flaws, your sensitivity, your vulnerability, and express them. Whether others see it or you see it first, that’s what real courage is.

marie claire: Do literary works help your music and acting?

Zhang Zhehan: Language has a unique power to capture inspiration. Words often feel more grounded to me—they give ideas a kind of solidity.

marie claire: Can you share anything about upcoming plans?

Zhang Zhehan: I’ve released three albums and one EP, and I’m discussing what the fourth album should be. I’m also looking at new scripts, thinking about what kind of expression I want next, and how to approach new film and television work.

marie claire: Any new identity you want to unlock in the future?

Zhang Zhehan: Our energy is limited. Being able to choose a few things and do them well is already enough. Even with sports, if I can play tennis well and ski well, that’s enough for me. Because of time and work, those are probably the two I can really focus on.

marie claire: What will you always make time for no matter how busy you are?

Zhang Zhehan: Tennis, definitely. No matter what, I’ll find time to play. And when I travel, having a book with me makes me feel less alone. Also studying English every day—that’s a habit I’ve managed to keep.

marie claire: One word for your hopes for the new year?

Zhang Zhehan: Warmth. We’ve gone through a lot in this era. People can grow distant, there’s doubt, uncertainty, and even the impact of the AI age. In times like this, the most important thing between people is warmth. We should try our best to give that to each other.

marie claire: Are fans more like friends, companions, or witnesses to you?

Zhang Zhehan: I see them as partners—teammates walking forward together, and friends who never miss a detail about you.

marie claire: If you could keep a long-term conversation with everyone, what would you want to talk about?

Zhang Zhehan: I’d share my life experiences—what school felt like, the environment behind each project, the ideas during creation, what I’ve achieved, what I’ve learned. Just sharing honestly.

marie claire: What impression do you hope to leave?

Zhang Zhehan: I don’t like labeling myself. The person in a magazine shoot is me, the person on stage is me, and the messy version at home is also me. I want people to see the real me. I’m not afraid to show the unpolished side, the casual side. I’m not always going to appear perfect. Sometimes short videos create the illusion that someone is always flawless. I hope people can also see the ordinary, real moments that matter too.
